Vergina-Pella Day Trip

It’s no secret that Greece is a city with more than its fair share of amazing history. We’re sure most people think of Athens when they think of Greek history, but the north of the country also has an incredible past and many, many stories to tell.

A short journey on our comfortable coach will take you straight to our first stop, Pella. This historic town is both the birthplace and resting place of Alexander the Great. Wander around and soak up the atmosphere of this astonishing archaeological site, built on the remains of the ancient city, accompanied by our English-speaking tour guide. Pella’s remarkable museum boasts a dazzling array of astounding artifacts that are amazingly well-preserved. There is something for every history buff here, from the vast, intricate floor mosaics to the gilded armour from the tombs of the Archontiko warrior nobles to the phallic-shaped drinking vessels!

From the resting place of Alexander the Great, we’ll take you to Vergina, another important Greek town where the remains of Alexander’s dad, King Philip II, are found. Among the many fascinating curiosities to be found at the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, the undoubted highlight is the marble tomb of King Philip II. You’ll see a golden Larnax (a small coffin) alongside an urn, marked with a 16-rayed sun, the symbol of Macedonia, which contains the king’s remains. Once the day trip is done, you’ll be as well-versed in local history as the famous Greek scholars!

Hop-on Hop-off Thessaloniki

This great value ticket combines our fantastic Vergina-Pella day trip with a 1-day hop-on hop-off bus ticket so you can get to know lovely Thessaloniki and all its highlights. Be the master of your own trip as you decide which stops along the route to hop on and hop off. You won’t want to miss the breathtaking stretch of coast that looks out over the impossibly blue Aegean Sea. Hop off right next to Thessaloniki’s famous White Tower to learn about its bloody history and climb up to the top for more wonderful views.

Hop back on again and head for the beautiful old town of Ano Poli, where you can happily while away an afternoon wandering along its cobbled streets and stopping for a bite to eat in a traditional taverna. Ano Poli is one of the few parts of the city that survived the devastating great fire in 1917 and, as such, is brimming with history. Don’t miss the historic Church of Agios Dimitrios, the city’s oldest church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the tranquil gardens of the 14th-century Vlatadon Monastery, both within easy walking distance of our bus route.
