Home to the beloved miraculous icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the Monastery is also the National shrine of Poland and the centre of Polish Catholicism. According to the tradition, the icon of the Black Madonna was painted by Luke the Evangelist on a table top built by Jesus himself. The large baroque monastery of Jasna Gora dominates the hilltop in Czestochowa and is always bustling with pilgrims and worshippers. It is a unique example in the troubled history of Poland of a treasure house which has survived unscathed, with its excellent collection documenting the most important events in the political and cultural history of Poland.
