Program details

Visit the first free African town in the Americas on this day trip to San Basilio de Palenque.

San Basilio de Palenque was the first free town in the Americas, founded by former slaves who achieved their emancipation during the Colombian colonial period.

This town remains a symbol of resistance and African pride due to its impressive history of struggle. Thanks to isolation and resistance, the palenqueros were able to preserve African culture, while at the same time creating new local traditions, such as Alegrías (a type of candy), Son Palenquero (a musical genre) and Lengua Palenquera (the first Spanish-based Creole language), which is still spoken here.
