Program details

Get ready for an unforgettable journey through Antioquian history and landscapes.

We’ll pick you up in the morning from your hotel and head towards Gúatape. As we leave Medellín, you’ll get amazing views of the city and pass by striking mansions. We’ll stop at the town of El Retiro, located in an exotic tropical forest. Here in 1757, Javiera Londoño ended slavery in the region; we’ll get the chance to see monuments to end of slavery and stretch our legs.

The tour continues to El Peñol, a village that was completely relocated to make way for a man-made lake in the mid-twentieth century. We’ll get to see a model of what the town was like before it relocated. As we move closer to El Peñol monolith, we’ll get stunning views of the lake and reservoir. You’ll get to see the monolith up close and consider how a gigantic volcanic eruption helped form one of the wildest staircases in the world.

Finally, we’ll stop in Guatapé, known as the town of “zocalos,” a traditional method of pastoral painting on the houses. Here we’ll eat lunch while enjoying magnificent views of the lake. The drive back to Medellín is the perfect way to take in the diversity of Antioquian landscape and local architecture.

We’re happy to make special stops along the way for you to take photographs, use facilities, or sample local snacks and artisan crafts.
