This exceptional area became the focus of the architectural movement known in Catalonia as modernisme at the end of the 19th Century. Take a stroll around this open air museum in the company of a knowledgeable local guide and admire the buildings designed by such celebrated architects as Gaudi, Domenech i Mutaner and Puig i Cadafalch.

The central part of the Eixample dstrict, known as the Quadrat d'Or is the place where Barcelona's new bourgeoisie competed with with one another to build the most aesthetically refined homes in the modernista style with highly decorated interiors and façades using a wide variety of materials, including wood, ceramics, stained glass and wrought iron.

Keep your eyes peeled as you walk around this this open air museum as the area is packed with amazing buildings with surprising architecture. They all boast magnificent floral decorations, neo-Gothic details and stained-glass work revealing the best of modernisme. A visit to the Quadrat d’Or, is an invitation to observe this legacy of architecture and art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the buildings you'll see include Gaudi's Casa Batllo and La Pedrera on the famous Illa de la Discordia together with Domenech i Muntaner's Casa Lleo and Puig i Cadafalch's Casa Amatller.
