Program details

Escape Shanghai’s bustling metropolis and experience beauty and tranquillity in China’s must-see water town, Wuzhen. Because of its location, Wuzhen has a history of being prosperous and is rich in historical and cultural heritage.
Wuzhen is an ancient water town that was founded over 1000 years ago. It sits upon the shimmering Beijing-Hanzhou Grand Canal. Most of the enchanting houses and bridges seem as though they are floating upon the peaceful mirror-like waterways, and have retained their original look and antiquated charm.

You will visit the former residence of renowned Chinese novelist and cultural critic, Mao Dun. His home, where he spent his childhood is now a museum in Wuzhen.
This will be followed by a visit to one of Wuzhen’s more unusual attractions, the Jiangnan Hundred Bed Museum. This curious museum is the first in China to collect and exhibit ancient beds of the Jiangnan area, some of which date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
A handicraft for which Wuzhen is famous for is the production of flower printed blue cloth.

As your tour continues, you will also see how local people today follow these traditional techniques of printing and dying the embossed blue cloth. Many examples of delicate woodcarving can be found at the Jiangnan Woodcarving Hall and a visit to Xiuzhen Temple is another highlight of this tour. This temple is regarded as one of the three most important Taoist temples in southern China.

China is often appropriately referred to as the ‘land of the silk’, due to it being the world’s largest producer of silk and a reputation for excellent quality. Your day will conclude with a visit to a silk factory followed by a dazzling tour of the Shecy Pearl City. This engrossing full-day tour also includes lunch at an authentic local restaurant.
