Program details

The Roman city of Corduba was founded by Consul Claudius Marcellus in 169 BC alongside the pre-existing Iberian city of Kartuba. By the time of Julius Caesar, the city had become the thriving capital of the Roman province of Hispania Ulterior, and under the Emperor Augustus it became one of the most important cities in the Empire, enjoying a period of great splendour. On this walking tour we’ll learn all about the fascinating history of Roman Cordoba and see some of its fascinating architectural legacy.

Some of the attractions we’ll visit include the Roman Tombs at Puerta Gallegos and the remains of the Forum in C/Cruz Conde. Then we’ll go on to visit the ruins of the so-called Templo Romano, actually the remains of another Forum dating from 2nd Century AD. We’ll follow the remains of the old city walls around to the Monument to Seneca, one of several great Roman philosophers who were born in the city.

Next we’ll pay a visit to the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum which contains a fascinating collection of antiquities from all periods of the city’s history. The remains of the magnificent Roman Theatre second only to the Colisseum in Rome have to be one of the highlights of this tour. This impressive construction was built during the reign of Augustus and is believed to have been destroyed by an earthquake in the 3rd Century AD. The tour ends as we cross the slow moving waters of the River Guadalquivir on the recently restored Puente Romano, a place to ponder the passing of time.
