Il programma nel dettaglio

Head off the beaten track and discover one of the most beautiful sites around Istanbul on this tour of Galata. Where Galata now stands, many centuries ago nothing but orchards blanketed the bucolic pastoral hillside. It used to be known back then as Sykai – meaning the Fig Field – and also as Peran en Sykais – the Fig Field on the Other Side. You may ask, on the other side of what? Well, of the magnificent Golden Horn, the hornlike river that branches out of the Bosphorus and that adopts a golden hue under sunlight. When the Byzantine Empire came into being this area began to be known as Galata, and the Byzantine emperor Theodosius II erected a splendid and imposing fortress on this site. Much later, between the 6th and the 15th centuries, Galata was a Genoese colony.

On this eye-opening tour through the canals of history, you will meander around the emblematic Galata Tower that supervises the area in solemn ancient silence. Throughout this fascinating day, imagine the forlorn stories that took place in a variety of constructions which now aren’t but ruins. Visit wondrous churches, age-old synagogues pertaining to the Jewish community, hospitals, bank buildings, sturdy city walls and even schools. Alongside your knowledgeable guide, the myths and legends about all these locations come to life thanks to his enthusiastic narrations; a real bonus on a trip to an unparalleled historical site such as this one. At night, you will dream of ages past.
