Transfer to the Gare de Lyon railway station and board the TGV train. Zoom south at speeds that regularly clock 320km/h (200 mph) while admiring the various landscapes of Burgundy and the Rhone Valley. Arrive at Avignon, the one-time second Rome, and immerse yourself in the la Provence profonde. The region is characterised by its olive groves, scrubland and limestone massifs all of which have over the centuries inspired many artists.

Visit the Unesco World Heritage Site Papal Palace and learn all about this masterpiece of medieval architecture from the audio guide. Stroll along the downtown area and watch the street artists.

After lunch, drive to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for a photo stop and continue with a guided visit of Les Baux de Provence, a hamlet dramatically perched 245 metres above ground on a mountain spur. Admire its historic houses dating back to the 16th century and enjoy free time for shopping of local products (perfumes, lavender and fabrics). End on a high with a guided visit to Pont du Gard aqueduct, an ancient Roman aqueduct that dates from the first century AD. Then transfer back to Avignon to catch the train to Paris.
