HIGHLIGHTS:
* Visit to two amazing archaeological sites
* A fun-filled boat tour to Ceibal along La Pasion River
* Six hour long tour on water and on land with a break for lunch along the way Back in its glory days, Ceibal was a major power and one of the most amazing sites of the Classic Period. Its privileged location – 200 meters above sea level – was ideal for keeping an eye on the surroundings, as well as giving it many political and military advantages. It was also thriving point for commerce. To reach this point perched atop a towering layer of limestone, hop aboard a boat and glide along La Pasion River. Throughout the brief cruise, admire the variety of migratory birds and wildlife before beginning the walking tour that takes you to Ceibal. Contemplate the ceremonial centre distributed over three high hills and the many buildings that are brimming with history.
Complete your day by also visiting Uaxactun, an ancient sacred site of the Maya. Delve into a series of ceremonial buildings, and admire the sculptures of sacred Maya animals – such as jaguars, turtles, eagles, parrots... – that symbolise the region's rulers and guardians. Uaxactun also counts with an observatory erected to mark the summer and winter solstices until the city was abandoned in the 10th century.
