Il programma nel dettaglio

The scars left by Hurricane Katrina can still be seen all over Louisiana almost a decade after she struck the south coast of the United States as you will discover during this informative and thought-provoking tour. Hear eyewitness accounts of the events surrounding the hurricane, which remains the most destructive natural disaster on American soil and cost the lives of more than 1,500 Louisianans. Learn about the chronology of events that leading up to landfall, how the storm unfolded and the devastating aftermath as swathes of the state were flooded and plunged into chaos.

Some of the most interesting of the many accounts you will hear are the history of the original city, the French Quarter, and the reasons for which it was built at this location on the Mississippi River. You will also drive past one of the actual breached levees and be able to appreciate the resulting disarray that displaced hundreds of thousands. Discover the connections between America’s retreating coastal wetlands, oil and gas pipelines, levee protection and how all of this can be affected by the passing of a hurricane. But the tour also offers its share of beauty; contemplate the Lakeview, Gentilly, New Orleans East, St Bernard and the Ninth Ward neighbourhoods.

Later, enjoy a stroll through the port of New Orleans, the second largest port in the country. Marvel at the sheer variety of products that are offloaded and then distributed around the country. This visit completes the big picture of the tour; after hearing about the pre-Katrina events, admire the ensuing economic rebirth of New Orleans.
