Il programma nel dettaglio

Immerse yourself in the watery world of Zhouzhuang, a beguiling place where time has stood still. Zhouzhuang is a famous and the best-preserved water town in Suzhou. A host of rivers and streams crisscross the town, and as a consequence stone bridges were built to serve as links. Twin Bridges and Fu’an Bridge are typical examples of these structures and the most famous in the town.

Many people come to Zhouzhuang to appreciate the traditional Suzhou architecture with two buildings in particular standing out: the Hall of Shen was the private residence of a very wealthy trader, and is a prime example of how the rich lived during feudal China. Built in 1742, the Hall of Shen occupies an area of over 2,000 square metres and is divided into three parts. Connected by arcades and aisles, this residence consists of seven courtyards and boasts over 100 rooms. The Hall of Zhang, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, is one of the few remaining buildings from that era in Zhouzhuang. Originally built by the Xu family, it was later bought by the wealthy Zhang family; this well-preserved building contains more than 70 rooms and has an unusual feature in that the Ruojing River flows right through it.

For many centuries Suzhou has been an important centre for China’s silk industry. A visit to the Silk Factory will allow you to follow the step-by-step process used in the production of this prized material.
This day-long tour offers the ideal introduction to the historical and architectural treasures of Zhouzhuang.
