The tour begins with a panoramic view of Iznik Lake from the bus, an area of stunning natural beauty.

Iznik was a major centre for the creation of faience pottery during the Ottoman period of the 16th century. Iznik tiles were used to decorate many of the mosques in Istanbul designed by Mimar Sinan, however this industry declined in the 17th century but has been restored to its’ former glory.

Museum of Iznik: The works exhibited in the museum consist of artefacts obtained from Iznik and the surrounding area found in archaeological excavations. Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman Period works are exhibited in the garden of the museum. These works consist of columns, sarcophaguses, relief, barrier plates, inscriptions, roof gutters, well bracelets and Islamic grave stones.

Afterwards we move on to see how the ceramic tiles which this region is famous for are made. The sights which we see include Tumulus and Monument tombs of Iznik and the Castle of Iznik (viewed from the road).

Hagia Sophia Church – built by Justinian I and modelled after the larger one of the same name in Istanbul, it was converted to a mosque by Ottoman Turks in 1337 but retains its’ attractive Byzantine architectural style.

Greeen Mosque: Recognised as the symbol of Iznik, the Green or Yesil Mosque takes its name from the turquoise coloured Iznik tiles and the bricks of its’ minaret which are a fine reflection of the Selcuk minaret style in Ottoman art.
