Discover the ancient city of Chiang Mai and visit its most impressive temple with this fascinating half-day tour. Enjoy a whistle-stop journey through the city’s 700 years of history, beginning with a scenic drive up a winding road that overlooks Chiang Mai. Gaze at the green garden city from the up high en route to the 600-year-old Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

More than 1,000 metres above sea level, the temple sits in the heavens above Chiang Mai. Inside, your eyes will immediately be drawn to the chedi, a structure that houses religious relics. The copper-plated chedi is topped by a glorious, five-tier gold spire that is visible for kilometres. Relics of the Lord Buddha rest inside.

The temple’s terrace offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city but there’s more. Climb the 306 steps of the grand staircase decorated with naga, a Thai mythological dragon-headed serpent. The view, more than the climb, will leave you breathless.

Back in the city, visit the Wat Saun Dok temple, which means flower garden. Another relic of the Buddha is contained in the glittering gold, bell-shaped chedi created in the Sri Lankan style. The next stop is Wat Chedi Louang temple which date back to the 14th century. A major earthquake in 1545 brought down the spire and damaged the chedi. Despite its ruined state, it remains an awe-inspiring sacred place. Saffron-robed monks and devout Thais make pilgrimages here to pray at the Buddha shrines.
