Scottish adventurer and TV presenter Alice Morrison recently discovered dinosaur footprints in the M’goun region, southeastern Morocco.

Alice made the discovery during a 1,400-kilometer expedition across the mountains of Morocco, which she finished Tuesday, October 27 2020.

DAY 1

Paris - Marrakech

Flight Paris / Marrakech. Reception at Marrakech airport by your guide and transfer to the hotel.


DAY 2

Marrakech - Ikhf N'Ighir

We leave the red city for the valley of Aït Bougmez (1800m). Allow around 5 hours by road. Visit of the marabout of Sidi Moussa. Night in a lodge Night in a lodge in Ikhf N'Ighir.


Walking time: 2h. Elevation: + 140m / - 120m. Transfer time: 5h.


DAY 3

Ikhf N'Ighr - Azib N'Ikiss

From Ikhf N'Ighr we follow the Aït Bougmez valley, a long green ribbon winding between the ocher mountains. The summits are arid and jagged. We cross pretty villages with adobe houses. Our hike takes us up a hill, by a steep path, to the "Igherm" of Sidi Chita. Then we continue through the valley of Assif n'Arous to Azib N'Ikiss (2300m), Night in tent.



Walking time: 7h. Elevation: + 500m / - 100m.

DAY 4

Azib N'Ikiss - Tarkeddit

Via the Aghrai pass at 3400m, from where we can see the M'Goun, we reach the grass-covered plateau of Tarkeddit (2900m), a place of convergence of shepherds from all the valleys, an essential passage for travelers and traders for refuel water.



Walking time: 5h30. Elevation: + 1100m / - 530m.

DAY 5

Tarkeddit - M'Goun - Tarkeddit

Departure at dawn, after breakfast to reach M'Goun, the highest point of the Central Atlas (4086m, optional ascent). Descent back to Tarkeddit.

Night in tent.


Walking time: 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Elevation: + 1370m / - 1370m.

DAY 6

Tarkeddit - Tasgaïwalt

From Tarkeddit (2900m), we pass the Asdrem Tessaout pass at 3200m and enter the gorges of the Tessaout wadi. From the pass, we discover, below, a green and cultivated valley that contrasts with the red mountains. In the distance, we can see the terraced crops and the village of Tasgaïwalt where we have to bivouac. Night in tent.



Walking time: 6h. Elevation: + 260m / - 900m.








DAY 7

Tasgaïalt - Aït Ali n'Itno

We always follow the wadi of Tassaout, which we will cross several times. Crossing the villages of Amezri and Ichbbakene. Night in the village of Aït Ali n'Itno. Night in tent.


Walking time: 7h. Elevation: + 40m / - 460m.

DAY 8

Aït Ali n'Itno - Tifardzine

We pass through the village of Megdaz at 1961m, a village classified by UNESCO before reaching the pass of Megdaz at 2454m. Walk along the rye fields. We will pass the village of Tagourkht at 2040m, before arriving at Tifardzine (2355m), where we will camp. Night in tent.



Walking time: 6.30 am. Elevation: + 1000m / - 500m.

DAY 9

Tifardzne - Inghmar

Via the Fadghate pass (2800m), then we reach the Tamba pass at 2800m and then its lake at the foot of Inghmar. Meeting of many nomads in this region. Night in tent.


Walking time: 5h30. Elevation: + 760m / - 940m.

DAY 10

Inghmar - Tighza

Descent into the valley of Ounilla through the sheepfolds of Anfergal. The valley is very narrow, covered with oleanders. On either side, there are only ocher, red or pink desert expanses where we can distinguish a few sparse trees and chaos of rocks. Arrive at the beautiful village of Tighza. Dinner and night in a lodge at 1900m.


Walking time: 4h30. Elevation: + 60m / - 700m.

DAY 11

Tighza - Afra

Transfer to Afra via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2260m. We now pass in the massif of the Western High Atlas and the region of Toubkal. Then walk to the Afra plateau. Night in tent.


Walking time: 2h15. Elevation: + 120m / - 300m. Transfer time: 2h.


DAY 12

Afra Plateau - Yagour Plateau

Departure on foot in the direction of the village of Assade then reach the Zat valley, a rocky and flowery valley. Crossing the village of Ouarzazt. Bivouac on the Yagour plateau, famous for its many rock engravings. We are at the foot of the Adrar Meltsene which rises to 3595m. Night in tent.


Walking time: 6.30 am. Elevation: + 900m / - 620m.

DAY 13

Yagour Plateau - Tikhfert

We leave Yagour to reach the village of Ouigrane. Magnificent view of a village and its terraced crops on the mountainside. Continuation of our route to the bottom of the Ourika valley, then climb in the forest of cedar and holm oaks to reach our bivouac in the red mountains of Tikhfert at 1700m.



Walking time: 5h30. Elevation: + 400m / - 900m.





DAY 14

Tikhfert - Timichi

The mule track will lead us to reach the upper valley of Ourika and its deep gorges, then continue on a balcony to discover the villages of:

Tadrart, Anfli, Tiourdiou, Timichi and their terraced crops. Dinner and night in a cottage at 2000m.



Walking time: 5h. Elevation: + 500m / - 300m.

DAY 15

Timichi - Tachddert

This morning, a long climb awaits us via the hilltop village of Iabassen, one of the highest villages in the Atlas. Continuation of the ascent to Tizi n'Tachedirt (3172m). Then descent and installation of the bivouac facing the village of Tachddert at 2400m.



Walking time: 5h30. Elevation: + 1170m / - 770m.

DAY 16

Tachddert - Ourai Valley

Beautiful sporting day to cross the highest pass of the route (Lekkemt 3555m). Then descend to the sheepfolds of the valley for lunch.

Continuation in the afternoon through the Ourai canyon to reach your bivouac at the foot of the pass at 3000m.



Walking time: 7h. Elevation: + 1590m / - 990m.

DAY 17

Ourai - Amsouzert

Col de Tizi n'Ouraï (3109m), surprising view of the Toubkal massif. Descent into the green valley of Amsouzert. Night in a lodge.



Walking time: 4h. Elevation: + 100m / - 1360m.

DAY 18

Amssouzert - Lake Ifni

We leave the valley with the green plots and the village of Amssouzert (1740m). Beautiful villages cling to the sides of the mountains, such as the village of Andous. We pass a pass, in a lunar landscape from which we will have a beautiful view of Lake Ifni (2300m). Free time by the lake. Night in tent.



Walking time: 3h30. Elevation: + 620m / - 130m.

DAY 19

Ifni Lake - Neltner Refuge

Climb up the Ifni valley via Tizi N'Ouanoums (3700m) to reach the Neltner refuge (3200m). Night in tent.


Walking time: 5h. Elevation: + 1400m / - 500m.

DAY 20

Refuge Neltner - Toubkal - Imlil

Ascent of Toubkal, highest point in North Africa (4167m). This race does not present any technical difficulty and allows you to enjoy an extraordinary view of the massif as well as the Haouz plain. Descent to Imlil, end of our hike.



Walking time: 9h. Elevation: + 967m / - 2367m.




DAY 21

Imlil - Marrakech

Return by minibus to Marrakech (around 1h30 drive). Free afternoon to shop and visit the city. Night at the hotel.



DAY 22

Return flight Marrakech / France.

PORTAGE

Only the business of the day. The mules carry the luggage.

FRAMING

By a French/English-speaking Moroccan guide, a graduate of the Tabant national school, assisted by a cook and muleteers.


Please note that our mountain guides are not authorized to guide you in the souks of Marrakech or Ouarzazate, approved tourist guides exist and find it hard to be encroached on their territory. So do not require your guides to accompany you there, you would put them in a bad position.




ACCOMMODATION

During the hike, in a lodge and in a bivouac. Hotel in Marrakech.

In hotel in Marrakech (day 1 and 21), double or triple rooms with bathroom; In a lodge or in tents during the hike (mattress provided). During the hike, comfort will be Saharan, that is to say basic: three-person tents and foam mattresses at your disposal. Do not forget, during this trip you will be far from everything and especially from your usual comfort. Here the comfort is not a thick soft mattress, but the presence of thousands of stars which shine above your heads and which seem so close (indeed the air is pure).



MEAL

Meals are prepared (and served) by a Moroccan cook who works wonders: picnic at noon, most of the time based on mixed salads. Hot and cooked meals in the evening, with a variety of Tajines and couscous. We also advise you to plan, according to your habits and personal taste, some energy supplements to eat while walking (dried fruits, cereal bars, etc.).



TRAVEL

Minibus or 4X4 for transfers to and from the hike. During the hike, mules carry the luggage.


WEATHER

dry and generally sunny. Heat in Marrakech but made bearable in the Atlas by the altitude.

• 1 short-sleeved t-shirts for 2 to 3 days of walking (and / or depending on the season, under long-sleeved sweaters) in breathable material. A windproof or softshell fleece jacket


• a waterproof and breathable windproof jacket, an over-rucksack, a water-repellent mountain (trekking) pants

• comfortable pants for the evening

• 2 hiking shorts for men. Prefer capri pants for women.

• walking socks (1 pair for 2 to 3 days of walking). Prefer wool or specific hiking socks. Avoid cotton (blisters)

• a pair of hiking boots that hold the ankles well, waterproof with a vibram-type sole. Remember to "test" new shoes and those not used for a long time beforehand.


• a pair of tennis shoes to cross rivers

• a pair of very light casual shoes for the evening.

OTHER DETAILS

Checked-in baggage must not exceed 20 kg. Also remember to put your pocket knife and any sharp or prickly object in the hold baggage, otherwise it will be confiscated upon boarding.
