Takes a short trip around the
mountain of Medvednica to enjoy and relax in the lush green hills of Zagorje.
This region so close to the capital offers
beautiful sights of peaceful rural scenery, castles, and churches on top of hills and stories waiting to be told.
One of them is the story of
Marija Bistrica, a popular pilgrimage site, dedicated to the statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to be miraculous. It is also the best place to find traditional handmade wooden toys and gingerbread cookies, both on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Nearby, we find
a castle of an aristocratic family with a museum dedicated to Peasants’ Revolts that took place in the 16th century, and an impressive monument dedicated to their legendary leader, Matija Gubec.
After a walk through historic events, enjoy
