“Becak” or pedicab is one of popular traditional transportations in Yogyakarta that can carry 1 to 2 passengers. Driving through the narrow alleys of Kotagede the old city of Yogyakarta believed as the glorious root of Mataram kingdom. Featuring the houses with many different architectural styles, on the West of the city we can see Kalang Palace the large and beautiful former home of Kalang nobles, a family of silver-smith who made jewels for the king. Today it became a place where people can buy and sell silver jewellery. Kotagede has hundreds of silver shops along the streets as the silver craft tradition existed for centuries. You will also find the heritage building of Mataram Kingdom which was built with red bricks and looks strong and peaceful. Inside of the complex stands the first mosque in Kotagede called “Besar mosque”. Along the way you will see old façade with old building of 1930 and deep inside of the kampong you will see some “pendopo” a traditional Javanese building made of big old teakwood built in 1700.
