A full day exploring the amazing city of ancient Ephesus where St Paul is said to have lived for three years and St John is believed to have settled with Mary, mother of Jesus, followed by an afternoon visit to a quaint hilltop village, once inhabited by Greeks and popular for its’ locally produced wine.

The journey to Ephesus takes the tour through much of western Turkey, by-passing the Aegean city of Izmir (ancient Smyrna). On arrival, this city of which approximately one third has been excavated so far, will amaze with its majestic buildings and column-lined main street. Created capital of Asia Minor in 27BC by Augustus, the population was approximately 250,000 growing to 400,000 in 100AD. During the tour we will see the remains of Roman buildings such as the Odeon, Fountain of Apollo, the magnificent amphitheatre and perhaps most spectacular of all, the beautiful Library of Celsus before visiting the shrine known as the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem ana), located on Mt Nightingale.

After lunch, there is time to explore the pretty village of Sirince, where women sell local agricultural produce such as olives and fruit as well as hand-crafted linens. Its’ elevated position affords spectacular views over vineyards, olive groves and the Aegean Sea in the distance.
