Liquids and cabin baggage: what you can and cannot take on board

What is allowed in the cabin

  • one piece of cabin baggage whose three dimensions together do not exceed 115 cm (as set out in Italian Ministerial Decree 001/36 of 28 January 1987). See the cabin baggage limits for each airline
    a handbag, briefcase or laptop computer
  • a camera, video camera or CD player
  • an overcoat or raincoat
  • an umbrella or walking stick
  • a pair of crutches or other walking aid
  • reading material for the journey
  • a carrycot/pushchair and baby milk/food needed for the journey
  • items bought in duty-free and other airport shops, or on board
  • liquid or solid medicines essential for strictly personal medical or dietary needs during the journey. Liquid medicines require a doctor's prescription
  • liquids in individual containers of no more than 100 ml or equivalent (e.g. 100 g), carried in a transparent, resealable plastic bag, fully closed, of no more than 1 litre capacity (about 18 x 20 cm), separately from the rest of your cabin baggage.
Note: Liquids include: water and other drinks, soups, syrups, creams, lotions and oils, perfumes, sprays, gels (including hair and shower gels), the contents of pressurised containers (including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants), pastes (including toothpaste), mixtures of liquids and solids, mascara and any other product of similar consistency.
A transparent resealable plastic bag is a container whose contents can be seen easily without opening it, with a fully sealing closure such as a zip or press seal, or any closure that can be closed again once opened.

What is not allowed in the cabin

a) Guns, firearms and other weapons
  • all firearms (pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, etc.)
  • replica and imitation firearms
  • firearm parts (except telescopic sights)
  • air pistols, air rifles and pellet guns
  • flare guns
  • starting pistols
  • toy weapons of any kind
  • ball bearing guns
  • industrial bolt and nail guns
  • crossbows
  • catapults/slingshots
  • harpoon and spear guns
  • animal humane killers
  • stunning or shocking devices such as cattle prods and ballistic conducted energy weapons (tasers)
  • lighters shaped like firearms
b) Pointed or edged weapons and sharp objects
  • axes and hatchets
  • arrows and darts
  • crampons
  • harpoons and spears
  • ice axes and ice picks
  • ice skates
  • penknives and flick knives with blades of any length
  • knives, including ceremonial knives, with blades of 6 cm or more, made of metal or any other material strong enough to be used as a weapon
  • meat cleavers
  • machetes
  • open razors and blades (except safety or disposable razors with blades enclosed in a cartridge)
  • sabres, swords and swordsticks
  • scalpels
  • scissors with blades of 6 cm or more
  • ski poles and walking or hiking poles
  • throwing stars
  • tools that could be used as pointed or edged weapons, e.g. drills and drill bits, box cutters, utility knives, all saws, screwdrivers, crowbars, hammers, pliers, spanners/wrenches, blowtorches
c) Blunt instruments
  • baseball and softball bats
  • clubs or batons, rigid or flexible, e.g. truncheons, billy clubs and similar
  • cricket bats
  • golf clubs
  • hockey sticks
  • lacrosse sticks
  • kayak and canoe paddles
  • skateboards
  • billiard and pool cues
  • fishing rods
  • martial arts equipment, e.g. knuckledusters, clubs, coshes, rice flails, nunchaku, kubotans, kubasaunts
d) Explosives and flammable substances
  • ammunition
  • blasting caps
  • detonators and fuses
  • explosives and explosive devices
  • replica or imitation explosive material or devices
  • mines and other explosive military stores
  • grenades of all types
  • gas and gas containers, e.g. butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen (in large quantities)
  • fireworks, flares of any kind and other pyrotechnics (including party poppers and toy caps)
  • non-safety matches
  • smoke canisters or cartridges
  • flammable liquid fuels, e.g. petrol, diesel, lighter fuel, alcohol, ethanol
  • aerosol spray paint
  • turpentine and paint thinner
  • alcoholic drinks over 70% alcohol by volume
e) Chemical and toxic substances
  • acids and alkalis, e.g. spillable "wet" batteries
  • corrosive or bleaching substances, e.g. mercury, chlorine bleach
  • disabling or incapacitating sprays, e.g. mace, pepper spray, tear gas
  • radioactive material, e.g. medical or commercial isotopes
  • poisons
  • infectious or biologically hazardous material, e.g. infected blood, bacteria and viruses
  • material capable of spontaneous ignition or combustion
  • fire extinguishers
f) Liquids
