General information

Destination
Lasko, Slovenia

Program details

The lonely Gračnica valley with the remains of what was once a Carthusian monastery uncovers the mysterious lives of the monks and tells a tale of undying love between Friderik II and Veronika Deseniška.

The tour includes guidance, a viewing of the Church of St. Maurice and remains of the monastery. Additionally, the visitors can taste a special travelling monk's herbal tea and homemade pastries. The tour lasts one hour. On the way to Jurklošter, there is an underpass with a 3.30 meter height limit. In 1170, the lonely Gračnica valley was occupied by the Carthusian monks. They founded a monastery which is one of the oldest Central European Carthusian monasteries. Some remains of the former monastery still survive today: the Church of St. Maurice, part of the wall and a defensive tower. The church features a remarkable octangular stone bell tower.

The Jurklošter Carthusian monastery invites you to find out more about the mysterious lives of the Carthusian monks and the undying love between Frederick II, Count of Cilli, and Veronika of Desenice.
