Program details

Ushuaia, which is the capital of Tierra del Fuego and often referred to as the most southerly city in the world, is a fascinating place in its own right and there is no better way to discover its hidden charms than by exploring it on foot in the company of an expert guide. With its dramatic landscapes of snow-capped mountains and the Beagle Channel forming a constant backdrop, it is also one of the most visually striking cities you are ever likely to visit.

Setting off from Maipú Avenue, the tour heads for the Luis Pedro Fique footbridge which in turn will take us to a neighbourhood known as La Mission, the historic part of the city where Europeans first settled. Next the tour passes through the Brown and Solier districts, which were built at the beginning of the 20th century when immigrants started to be attracted to the town in large numbers.

Included on our route will be various old houses constructed by some of Ushuaia’s leading founding families: the Bebans, Pastorizas, Cangas, Fiques and so on. There will also be a chance to visit the Provincial Legislature, the former seat of government. In the 1980s the city started to experience rapid growth with a significant influx of new settlers and there will ample opportunity to experience the striking contrast between the old and new parts.
