Dig up some history from right beneath your feet during your time in Andalusia with a tour of the region’s mining towns. Explore communities full of character, charm and history that have been established around the operations of international mining giant Rio Tinto.
With the help of a knowledgeable guide who can inform you in Spanish, English or German, your tour begins with an overview of the area’s important mining hubs such as the English neighbourhood of Minas near Huelva. Stroll the town’s centre before we build on our day of learning with a trip to the mining museum, brimming with fascinating facts about this important industry for the people of Andalusia. It will then be time to get above it all as we head for the picturesque town of Aracena, the largest town in the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. Here we can relax and enjoy sweeping, panoramic views of the city.
As a final option to end your day of underground discovery, delve into Andalusia’s Cave of Wonders or ‘Gruta de las Maravillas’, the largest cave in Spain. Known as ‘Aracena’s most cherished treasure’ this natural subterranean wonder is a source of local pride, employment opportunities and a significant tourist attraction.
