Program details

Discover the beautiful city of St Petersburg then enjoy an in depth tour of one of its most emblematic landmarks: St Isaac’s Cathedral.

Take in the ambience of this lively imperial city and view some of its most famous landmarks as we travel around. Then prepare to be dazzled by the grandeur of St Isaacs. Classed as the world’s fourth largest cathedral, this marvellous building is a must see. From miles around its stunning golden dome dominates the skyline giving you a tantalising taste of the extravagant opulence you will find inside.

Designed by French architect Auguste de Montferrand as the Russian Empire’s main cathedral, it took an incredible 40 years to build and cost almost ten times as much as the Winter Palace. It was finally opened in 1858. Gaze in wonder at the intricate sculptures on the facade and note that the massive columns are made from one single piece of red granite. As we enter the building you are struck by its enormity and by the sheer lavishness of the decoration. Semi-precious stones, marble and gold were used in abundance and fantastic mosaics and frescos adorn every corner of the building. Of course, only the best artists of the day were enlisted to carry out the works.

Visit an exhibition which displays the history of the cathedral building, then climb up the steps to reach the colonnade just below the dome and be dazzled not only by the pure gold plating but also by the spectacular views of the city. Make sure to bring your camera!
