Lose yourself in the labyrinth of Santo Domingo de Guzman, known only as Santo Domingo, a brilliant example of Spanish Baroque architecture in Mexico. Its substantial sanctuary constitutes an impressive system of courtyards and hidden rooms to discover. The rooms that formerly constituted the monastery now proudly serve as host to the Cultural Centre of Oaxaca. This important museum collection of pre-colonial artefacts was originally founded with the help of a famous Oaxacan-born artist, Francisco Toledo.

See the beautifully detailed ceiling stretch above you in a splendid arc as you walk the church’s hallowed aisles. Stroll the famous street of Alcalá to reach Zócalo, the famous public square where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a feast for the senses. Take in the colourful surroundings, uplifting music and sumptuous flavours of traditional Mexican fare. Enter the impressive Cathedral of Oaxaca and browse the numerous interesting local market stalls.

You will be spoiled for choice with visits to two famous local markets, Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre, both renowned for offering a plethora of colours, sounds and smells that truly delight the senses. There will be shops and museums to explore, with a full two hours to wander the Museum of the Cultures and view its extensive collection of cultural artefacts and treasures.
