Program details

Textile lovers, home-ware hunters and anybody looking for that perfect souvenir – look no further! Come along for a tour of the famously colourful village of Teotitlan del Valle. A name meaning ‘Place of God’ in the language of the ancient Aztecs, this tiny municipality in the foothills of the Sierra Juarez Mountains in Oaxaca is known throughout Mexico, and the world for its bright and intricate handmade carpets and rugs. Most of these one-off pieces are lovingly woven by hand on traditional looms. Artisans use wool from sheep that live in the surrounding countryside and natural pigments to create their masterpieces.

The making of these delicate ‘Tapetes Tejidos’ is famous worldwide, and you can see it first hand in this once with this once-in-a-lifetime tour. Enjoy refreshment with a visit to the Mezcal factory where a favourite local beverage, tequila is produced. Watch a demonstration of how this iconic Mexican tipple is made, and of course you can test its quality for yourself.

Finally, witness the natural wonders of Hierve el Agua. The site is home to a warm natural spring, and a specific mix of minerals including calcium carbonate and magnesium result in the creation of a petrified waterfall where water has run off a cliff, streaked with accents of yellow sulphur.
