Set out to discover the famous monuments and secret sites of enigmatic San José, the charming capital of exotic Costa Rica. It's a city packed with beautiful 19th and early 20th century architecture, from theatres to houses to museums, as well as traditional adobe structures that could be straight from a coffee plantation. This fascinating tour will peel back the layers and reveal the history and culture of San José, with your informative guide on hand to tell you everything you could wish to know about the city.



Pass through some of the prettiest residential areas in the city, and visit the National Museum, one of the most important museums in Costa Rica. On Mondays, when the museum is closed, the tour heads to the equally fascinating Museum of Children, housed in an old prison, or to the science museum in La Salle. Next it’s the National Theatre, right at the heart of the city, before you join the crowds downtown in Democracy Square, the ‘Plaza de la Democracia’, to learn more about the city. On to the subterranean Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, the ‘Museo de Oro Precolombino’. With more than 1,600 artefacts dating back to 500AD, you can spot beautiful animal figurines, earrings, and golden warrior and maiden statues, each a tribute to the lasting love of gold, and all its connotations of wealth and power.



Finally, browse the beautiful local crafts on offer at a nearby handicrafts shop. You'll spot hand carved and beautifully painted furniture, brightly coloured wooden animal masks, visit textiles and clothing and native jewellery and pottery. Pick up a souvenir to remind you forever of your fun-filled day exploring this great city.

Please note on Mondays the National Museum is closed, so the tour visits the Museum of Children or the Science Museum. Usually the tour enters the National Theatre, but on Sundays when it’s closed you can view it from outside.
