Program details

Return to the Middles Ages in Toru?. This well-preserved Polish city offers medieval gothic architecture in a modern, lively urban center. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Toru? pops up with regularity on lists heralding the must-see and most beautiful cities of the world. Toru? is also the birthplace of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. He discovered that the Earth is not the centre of the universe. Toru?, however, definitely should be! You’ll see why with a visit to the amazingly intact old town. Unlike many Polish cities, Toru? escaped mass destruction during World War II. The Gothic buildings, many in brick, are originals and recent restorations have enhanced their beauty. Even today many Toru? residents live in Gothic architecture homes with wall paintings and wood-beamed ceilings added in the 16th to 18th centuries. We will drop by a 15th century home which scholars believe was the birthplace of Toru?’s most famous citizen, Copernicus. The Copernicus House (n.b.- House of Nicolaus Copernicus) is now a museum dedicated to his revolutionary work. Next up, the Cathedral of SS John the Evangelist and John the Baptist which will astound you. The monumental 14th century hall is packed with Gothic sculptures and Renaissance and Baroque epitaphs. We will scale the bell tower to take in a bird’s eye view of the city. After feasting on Toru?’s architectural heritage, it’s time to taste its culinary contribution. The city is famous for its gingerbread that is made today as it was in the 16th century. Sample the gingerbread that Chopin loved and buy other souvenirs before heading back to Gdansk.
