Program details

Explore the ancient city of Pergamon, a centre of learning in classical times, with this full day tour. Visit the Aesculapium, which was at the vanguard of medical research and thought, and the Acropolis, where you will uncover a wealth of ruined temples and other structures, including the ‘wrapping’ of Cleopatra’s wedding present.

Come with us to explore one of the largest and most important ancient Greek archaeological sites: the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Pergamon, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon until it was absorbed by the Roman Empire.

The adventure starts at the Acropolis, which occupies a vast site overlooking the valley of the river the ancients called Caicus. You will see the remains of temples devoted to Athena, Trajan, Zeus and Dionysus are visible. So, too, the Sanctuary of Demeter, the Gymnasium of Youth, the Odeon, the Agora, the Great Theatre, the Roman baths and the Library, considered one of the greatest in the ancient world and which, legend has it, was pillaged so Mark Antony could give the books to Cleopatra as a wedding present.

After a traditional Turkish lunch, visit the Archaeological Museum of Pergamon before continuing to Aesculapium, the city’s medical centre named after Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine. The learned physicians who taught here were ahead of their time and pioneered healing methods such as blood transfusions, meditation and therapy based on the sounds of music and water.
