Program details

Come and experience the dramatic sight of Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower with this evocative tour of Videy Island near Reykjavik. A poignant homage to John Lennon and testament to Lennon and Ono’s campaign for world peace, the Imagine Peace Tower is a fitting artistic expression of an enduring ideal.

Your evening tour begins with a ferry ride to beautiful Videy Island and a guided walk towards the Peace Tower, with pauses to point out places of interest along the way. The Peace Tower, conceived by Yoko Ono, takes the form of a wishing well from which beams of light emerge vertically into the sky, with the words ‘Imagine Peace’ inscribed in 24 languages around the base. It is lit every year an hour after sunset between 8 October, Lennon’s birthday, and 8 December, the day on which he was shot. It is also illuminated between the winter solstice and the New Year and for one week during the spring equinox, as well as a few other selected dates. One of the mesmerising features of the tower is that the strength, intensity and brilliance of its light continually change with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions, unique to Iceland. This creates a clear pillar of light on a cloudless night, beams iridescent with rainbow refractions in rain or snowfall, and brilliantly reflecting off and through any passing layers of cloud.

The combined effect of Icelandic scenery and Ono’s artistry produces a moving and fitting tribute as well as an unforgettable experience.
