Program details

Take a journey and discover an alternative side to Singapore. Starting your tour in Kampong Glam – named after the Gelam Tree which grew in abundance in the 1800s. Once the seat of the old Malay Royalty, it still retains the charm of a bygone era and the influence of the Arab traders.

After taking a relaxing stroll on the beautiful Changi Beach, you will explore the rustic, laid-back Changi Village, whose easy-going charms offer a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Singapore city.

When the Japanese invaded Singapore in 1942, few could have imagined the horrors that awaited the country. Allied soldiers were held at the Changi Prison, where POWs and civilians were treated inhumanely and routinely tortured. Today, a replica of the chapel built by the POWs and a museum stand as reminders of the crimes that took place here.

The tour will take you through Tampines New Town, a typical heartland township built on the site of former rubber plantations. Tampines has been singled out by the United Nations for creating the conditions for a perfect habitat for modern living.

The final leg focuses on the cultural heritage of the country’s Malay residents, who make up about a seventh of the population. At the Malay ethnic area you will learn about their invaluable contribution to Singapore’s development.
