Delve into the fascinating layers of cultural and historical heritage to be found in Eyup, one of Istanbul’s less-visited districts and one that is full of hidden treasures.



Although Eyup lies outside the historical peninsula and the city walls, there is evidence to suggest that it actually predates larger Istanbul. Its location beyond the walls has meant that the area has long been used as a place of burial and it is the site of Christian churches as well as a large Muslim burial ground. To this day it remains a sacred place of homage for Turkey’s Muslims.



Our tour begins with a visit to the Mosque of Eyub al Ansari, the companion and standard bearer of Prophet Muhammad. This was the first major mosque to be built in Ottoman-era Constantinople and many pilgrims now come to venerate the al Ansari tomb. More mosques, schools and fountains were built in the surrounding area and since many Ottoman officials wished to be buried near al Ansari’s resting place, the cemetery became one of Istanbul’s most desirable.



See the mausoleum of Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, the man who came from a humble family of shepherds in what is now Bosnia and rose to become Grand Vizier; the mausoleum of Sutlan Resat and the Tekke (convent) of the Kalendari Sect. The walk then continues uphill through the Eyup cemetery and ends on Pier Loti Hill.
