Program details

Visit the magical mountain of Montserrat rising majestically 1,236 metres above the surrounding countryside. Explore the Royal Basilica with its famous centuries-old carving of the Moreneta, the patroness of Catalonia, and learn all about the fascinating 1,000 year history of this Benedictine Abbey. Then go for a hike around the peaks and discover the magnificent scenery and weird rock formations.

As you drive through the picturesque small towns and villages, the unusual silhouette of the Mountain of Montserrat looms over the horizon. This unique area contains one the country's most important museums as well as the shrine of the patron saint of Catalonia. You'll visit the Royal Basilica, shrine to the Black Virgin of Montserrat, also known as la Moreneta, believed to be a Romanesque carving from the 12th century. Generations of the faithful have been making the pilgrimage here for more than a thousand years.

You will also learn all about the history of the great Benedictine Abbey and find out about life behind the monastery walls with a brief audiovisual presentation. On some days, the children's choir sings in the monastery at midday, and so you may be fortunate enough to catch one of their delightful performances.

The visit also includes a tasting of four of the typical liquors prepared by the monks themselves at the monastery. Neither should you miss a stroll around the mountain. The area is magnet for climbers and the weird rock formations – there are plenty of trails for all ages and abilities.
